History of St. Michael & All Angels
1862.
The Anglican Mission was established in Hawaii at the request of King
Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma
1925.
The Rev. Henry Willey was assigned to serve the Anglican Church on Kauai and
established Christ Church in Kilauea and All Saints Church in Kapaa.
August 15, 1963.
Archdeacon Charles T. Crane hosted a meeting to discuss establishing an
Episcopal church in communion with the Philippine Independent Church (PIC),
led by Fr. Timoteo Quintero.
October 4, 1963.
Lihue parishioners approved the purchase of seven houselots in Lihue and
proceeded with plans, fundraising, and organization of the mission.
November 3, 1963.
The first service of St. Michael and All Angels was held at Wilcox
Elementary School, across the street from the present setting of the
church.
1964.
The Diocese purchased the seven house lots (57,636 square feet) for $38,089.
Parishioners launched a capital campaign to design and build the church.
May 16, 1965.
The new church, designed by Charles Wagner, was dedicated.
1966-1974.
The Rev. Charles Burger became the first resident vicar of St. Michael and
All Angels, followed by The Rev. Elsbury Reynolds (1968-70), The Rev.
Richard Simpson (1970-71), and The Rev. George Eppley (1971-74).
1974.
The Rev. Jan Rudinoff arrived as Vicar.
1988.
The Rev. Malcolm Miner joined St. Michael and All Angels as Associate
Priest.
November 11, 1990.
The last service was held in the original church, after which it was
deconsecrated, dismantled, and donated to the Kauai Interfaith Council.
February 12, 1991.
The new church, designed by Steve Shackleton and built by Curtis Law, was
dedicated by The Rt. Rev. Donald Hart, Bishop of Hawaii.
August 16, 1992.
The congregation voted to move from mission to parish status. The Rev. Jan
Rudinoff was called to be the first rector.
September 11, 1992.
Hurricane Iniki devastated Kauai and for several months St. Michael’s Parish
Hall became disaster headquarters for the American Red Cross.
February 2, 1996.
The Rev. Carol M. Arney was ordained a priest by Interim Bishop George Hunt
and served as Associate Rector until November 1997.
January 18, 2004.
The parish celebrated the retirement of the mortgage, having met the goal to
pay down $96,000, matched 2 to 1 ($192,000) by an anonymous donor.
February 24, 2004.
The Rev. Jan Rudinoff retired after 30 years of service to St. Michael and
All Angels.
March 8, 2004 – January 29, 2006.
The Rev. Jim Bethell served as Interim Rector.
February 19, 2006.
The Rev. William Miller started his service at St. Michael and All Angels. |
